The Rio Grande flows through the heart of Santa Elena Canyon in near-perfect stillness, its surface a mirror for the towering limestone walls rising 1,500 feet on either side. This photograph was made from just outside the canyon on 8×10 large format slide film — the composition nearly symmetrical, the two great cliff faces almost converge and the golden light of morning rakes across the stone in ochre and orange.
